Updated: May 6

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 4 tbsp shortening

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water

  • 2 quarts oil for frying

  • Chantico RAW agave

DIRECTIONS

  1. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Cut in the shortening until the pieces are pea-sized. Pour in the warm water and mix to form a dough.

  2. Cover the dough with a cloth and let rest 20 minutes.

  3. Heat the oil in a deep pan to 375ºF.

  4. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut the dough into 3 inch squares. Fry until golden brown on both sides, then place on paper towels to drain off excess oil.

  5. Serve hot and fresh with agave.
